This is the third biennial conference of the International Association for Ecology and Health (IAEH). Association members have special rates for this and all Ecohealth conferences, and we invite all conference participants to become members of the IAEH.
In Ecohealth 2010 we aim to bring together academic institutions, government bodies and civil society groups to discuss jointly the major challenges facing people, wildlife and ecosystems internationally in 2010 and the future. We are placing a major emphasis on the perspectives of peoples most vulnerable to the harms of ecosystem destruction, including indigenous peoples, women, and young people. Our aims are:
- To bring together academic institutions, government bodies and civil society groups to discuss jointly the major challenges facing people, wildlife and ecosystems internationally at the end of this first decade of the 21st Century
- To place a major emphasis on the perspectives of peoples most vulnerable to the harms of ecosystem destruction, including indigenous peoples, women, and young people.
The main themes of the conference
The main themes of the conference reflect our title: Global Ecohealth Challenges; Multiple Perspectives. The goal of the conference is to discuss critical and timely issues – both contributing to important international policy decisions and profiling important themes for science and policy. Our goal will be to bring together multiple perspectives on the critical Ecohealth challenges of our time.
We will have three themed days, with each day starting with a panel of keynote speakers brought from academia, policymakers, and civil society. The three main themes for the conference are:
- Urban Ecohealth, with papers and posters invited on the following themes
- Sustainable Cities & Health
- Environmental and Ecological Justice
- Food in the cities
- Urban ecosystems
- Youth perspectives on urban ecohealth
- Biodiversity and Ecohealth, with papers and posters invited on the following sub-themes
- Conservation medicine and biodiversity
- Biodiversity indicators for ecohealth
- Environmental ethics and biodiversity
- Species loss and ecohealth
- Indigenous peoples and minority perspectives on biodiversity
- Sustainability and future priorities for Ecohealth, with papers and posters invited on the following sub-themes
- Climate Change and Climate Justice
- Sustainable Consumption and Production
- Ecological Ethics and Rights
Throughout the conference, a cross-cutting theme will be the Association's objective to "Encourage development of transdisciplinary teaching, research and problem-solving that cut across many fields of scholarship (including natural, social and health sciences, and the humanities) and draws upon multiple types of knowledge."
We welcome abstracts and submissions focused on innovations in Ecohealth research, education, policy and practice, including:
- Conceptual and methodological advances in Ecohealth;
- Advances and trends in Ecohealth education and training;
- Innovations and developments in linking research, policy and practice;
- Capacity building for Ecohealth at local, regional and global scales.
- Opportunities and challenges in transdisciplinaity - linking many fields of scholarship (including natural, social and health sciences, and the humanities) and drawing upon multiple types of knowledge.
London Photographic Competition for London Schools
To promote the conference themes internationally, we are holding a new award for Ecohealth photography, for young people in London’s schools to show us what they think of the themes of Ecohealth. We will launch this new award in London in 2010, developed in collaboration with the London Photographic Association, who will support and promote this award internationally.
